The Secret Life of Bees brings you on a journey with a fourteen year old girl, Lily Owens. Set in Sylvan South Carolina, 1964, racism and the Civil Rights Act is at its peek. Lily lives with her abusive father T-Ray, and is held under the burden of thinking she was the reason for her mothers death. Her only mother figure is Rosaleen, the housekeeper whom she looks to for guidance. On the day the Civil Rights Act is passed, Rosaleen decides to walk to town to vote and Lily joins her, not knowing this small journey will change their lives forever. Rosaleen and Lily come across a group of prejudice, racists men who begin to argue with Rosaleen and, after being beaten, ends up in jail. When T-Ray picks Lily up from the police station, an argument breaks out between the two of them which leads to T-Ray telling Lily her mother left her and never loved her, leaving Lily angry and running away. The long journey to Tiburon, where her mother is from, begins until she reaches a general store with the same Black Mary picture as the one her mother left behind. Rosaleen and Lily follow directions from the store manager and end up at the Boatwright house. The Daughters of Mary (August, May and June) take Lily in as an orphan and August teaches her the ways of proper beekeeping. Lily overcomes her own racism as she falls in love with Zach, as well as learning the power of female community.
